Desert Hills and Yucca fire departments responded to a single-vehicle crash that occurred at milepost 23 near an eastbound Interstate 40 rest area. Strong winds intensified a fire that engulfed the vehicle and thickened the dark smoke. The dynamics of the situation made it difficult for rescuers to extricate the victim.
Fire department officials determined that one person was killed. After the fire was contained not much of the truck remained. It was burned down and it became unclear if there were other people in the semi-truck with the victims.
Trails of carrots helped determine the semi was hauling produce. Debris of another vehicle and small tire marks, possibly those belonging to a small car was found at the scene leading investigators to think there might have been another vehicle involved in the crash. The semi’s fuel tank ruptured on impact.
