August 29th ─ 6 individuals were injured after a semi-truck caught fire following a collision with a multiple vehicles on Interstate 10 (I-10) near Ray Road in Phoenix early Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 12:28 p.m. when Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers responded to a call of collision between a sedan and a large semi-trailer. According to a DPS spokesman, the semi-trailer was likely going too fast before colliding with the sedan, and the force of the collision pushed the sedan into 2 other vehicles. The crash resulted in a fire that spread from the semi-trailer to one of the other vehicles. A DPS trooper and several bystanders were able to successfully extricate 2 individuals out of the vehicle engulfed in flames.
The trooper sustained minor injuries and was treated on the scene by EMTs. Officials shut down the I-10 westbound while crews investigated the incident. 2 individuals suffered burns and were transported by ambulance to Maricopa Medical Center while 4 other individuals with less serious injuries were sent to local hospitals, according to the Chandler Fire Department. DPS said the burn victims are listed in stable condition and the driver of the semi-truck was not injured. The investigation is ongoing and authorities have yet to determine of alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash.
