The mother, a 21-year-old, was six months pregnant at the time of the crash. She was riding in a Chevrolet Aveo which was traveling west on Thomas Road. The Aveo is one of Chevrolets most recent vehicles. It is a sub-compact vehicle that comes in a hatchback as well as a traditional body style. The U.S. LT version of the vehicle comes with five doors.
As the vehicle was traveling westbound, for an unknown reason the driver drove onto the eastbound lanes colliding head-on with a U.S. Postal Service semi-truck. The crash happened near 33rd Street according to various resources and officials.
Upon arrival to the scene, Phoenix Fired Department Paramedics determined the unburned child was distressed. The mother was immediately transported to the hospital where an emergency operating room was awaiting to help deliver the child.
The driver of the vehicle, a 31-year-old was uninjured.
Physicians determined that the unborn child was in extreme critical condition and the mother had to immediately induce labor.
The mother of the child is in stable condition. The baby was successfully born and is a boy. His condition is being maintained by the hospital staff.
The cause of the accident is being investigated. It is unknown if the driver was intoxicated or what his reasons were for crossing the road.
The condition of the driver behind the wheel of the U.S. Postal Office semi is unknown. Post office staff will coordinate the delivery of the mail in the truck. Perhaps they will use another vehicle to deliver the mail while the semi is towed away for repairs at the Post Office repair shop.
