A 32-year old Arizona woman is hospitalized with serious injuries along with her 3 children who suffered minor injuries following a collision near Desert Center on Interstate 10 (I-10) east of the Coachella Valley in Southern California early Tuesday morning, Nov 28th. According to California Highway Patrol, they received multiple reports around 5:15 a.m. of a single-vehicle collision involving a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV. The driver, 32-year old Lauren Sanders of Phoenix, was traveling in the eastbound lanes of the I-10 highway, when for reasons unknown, Sanders veered off the right side of the road and overturned coming to a stop about 75 feet off the road just east of Red Cloud Mine Road in Desert Center about 70 miles east of Palm Springs. Sanders, who was not wearing her seat belt, was ejected from the SUV and suffered major injuries.
Multiple drivers who witnessed the collision, pulled over to render aid to the family before first responders could arrive. Sanders was traveling from California to Arizona with her 3 children, 2 girls aged 6-years old and 8-years old and a boy aged 4-years old all of whom suffered minor injuries. Sanders was flown by helicopter to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for treatment. The 3 children were transported by ambulance to Desert Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. CHP officer Mike Radford credits the children’s minor injuries to the fact they were safely restrained in car seats. Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the crash, but they ruled out drugs and alcohol as being a factor. The CHP shut down eastbound lanes for about 30 minutes so the medevac helicopter could land. The road was reopened by 6:30 a.m. and traffic was flowing minutes later.
The stretch of highway between Dillon Road and Highway 177, just east of the Tex Wash Bridge, where the crash occurred has become notorious for many past fatal collisions in recent years. California Department of Transportation has been trying to find a way to reduce the amount of collisions on the 45-mile stretch of the I-10 highway. Most recently, an Oct. 26th crash where 2 trailer-trucks that killed 3 people when 1 of the trailer-trucks collided with the other in the eastbound lanes of the I-10 near Eagle Mountain Road. A 13-month old infant girl survived after being ejected from 1 of the trailer-trucks and eastbound lanes of the I-10 were shut down for several hours while authorities investigated the collision. Prior to that Oct. 26th collision, at least 10 people died this year in 8 separate crashes on that stretch. 12 people died in 10 crashes through all of 2016 on the same stretch raising the call for action to reduce such tragic accidents.
