An argument amongst two high school male students ignited a brawl in Maya High School’s cafeteria. The high school is located on 37th and Glendale avenues. The students were arguing about a previous fight started by two female students on a city bus when the first fight broke out.
An off-duty police officer working as a security guard for the school attempted to break the fight then someone kicked him in the head. In the midst of trying to break up the fight, another one broke out. Outmanned, the security officer used pepper spray on the students to stop the brawl. This caused loud cries and screams from the victims.
Phoenix police officers and fire fighters arrived to provide assistance.
Eleven students were evaluated for injuries relating to the brawl and the pepper spray incident. None needed hospitalization.
