The accident occurred near Arizona 143 in Phoenix at about 5:30 a.m. A white pickup truck crashed and rolled over along the freeway barrier on the HOV lane at 40th Street. The driver of the pickup died in the process.
When authorities arrived to the scene, they found the dead woman. She was found inside the white pickup truck that had rolled over on the interstate, according to AZ Central.
While they attended to the accident, they kept three lanes open. That decision lead to significant traffic backups for at least a mile. Interstate 10, Loop 202 and U.S. 60 especially affected the driving time of vehicles heading to downtown Phoenix from East Valley.
To increase the flow of traffic and expedite the clearing of the accident, officials shut down the entire westbound I-10 section that was affected. Rush hour traffic seeped into the streets of Tempe. This overflow of traffic on Tempe Streets irritated residents who had a difficult time moving about their usually less interrupted neighborhood streets.
Authorities expect to have the scene of the accident cleared sometime in the afternoon. It has not been reported specifically how many vehicles were involved in the crash.
