Apache Junction, AZ (September 21, 2018) – A man was killed after being struck by a school bus in Apache Junction Friday morning, September 21st, Apache Junction officials said. The victim, identified as 36-year-old Clinton Pennington, was reported to have been hit by the bus on Phelps Drive near Broadway Avenue in the evening at around 6 p.m. According to Apache Junction police and fire officials, the school bus was traveling northbound on Phelps Drive, turning into a neighborhood, when Pennington’s southbound motorcycle collided with it.
The driver and ten students on the bus were assessed without any injury. Pennington was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities closed Phelps Drive between 5th Avenue and Apache Trail for several hours during investigations. They have not determined whether a high rate of speed or impairment was a factor in the crash.
