The 56-year old woman was crossing at the intersection of Southern Avenue and Power Road against the light in a hurry to catch a Valley Metro bus at about 6:30 a.m. She failed to yield to the oncoming traffic and was struck by a Ford Focus. The driver of the Focus was momentarily blinded by the rising sun and did not stop in time to prevent the accident.
The impact pushed the woman against a light pole in the median divider east of Power Road. Paramedics began to give the woman CPR as soon as they arrived. They failed to get a response from her. She was transported to Osborne Healthcare Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Police say that speed and impairment were not a factor in the collision.
