Phoenix, AZ (October 13, 2018) – A woman was arrested and charged with manslaughter after she struck and killed a pedestrian Saturday, October 13th, at a gas station near North 35th and West Glendale avenues, Phoenix police reported. The driver, 33-year-old Shanika Bennett, was on the road when she lost control of her vehicle and swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle. According to Phoenix police, she was unable to stop or slow her car, and went off the street into a gas station, where 34-year-old pedestrian Sergio Grimaldo was walking in the parking lot.
Bennett’s car struck Grimaldo along with a parked vehicle and a pole, police said. Grimaldo was transported by Phoenix Fire Department to a hospital in extremely critical condition, and later succumbed to his injuries. No details surrounding Bennett’s condition was released by police, but determined her to be impaired at the time of the crash. Bennett was arrested and booked into jail on one charge of manslaughter. Phoenix police continue to investigate the crash and circumstances surrounding it.
