Authorities in Arizona are reporting the death of a 3-year old toddler boy following a serious 2-vehicle fatal crash that also injured 3 adults and another young child in north Phoenix Monday night, Feb. 12th. North Phoenix Police Department says that the fatal incident occurred shortly after 9:00 p.m. near the intersection of 18th Street and Greenway Parkway. According to Phoenix police, an SUV being driven by an adult man, with a woman passenger and 2 children were traveling eastbound on Greenway Parkway when the SUV collided with a Honda sedan when turning left onto 18th Street. The force of impact sent the SUV off the road and into a cement block wall around a residence.
All the occupants inside the SUV except for the 36-year old driver were ejected from the vehicle during the collision. Sgt. Vince Lewis of the North Phoenix Police Department said of the fatal accident, "When these ejections take place, it suggests that the occupants were not properly restrained. We are talking a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old. There should be some child restraint systems deployed in this situation and they weren't." First responders arrived to find the 3-year old boy in critical condition. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead by medical staff. The 33-year old woman passenger and a 6-year old girl were also taken to a local hospital and listed in critical condition with serious major injuries. The 36-year old driver of the SUV and the 20-year old driver of the Honda sedan were both treated for non-life threatening injuries and are expected to recover.
Isaiah Compos, the owner of the residence that owns the cement wall that the SUV crashed into, described his attempts to render aid following the collision, "I just heard people screaming and running around, they were trying to find their kids, they just kept saying I can't find my kids.” Compos discovered the injured 6-year old girl in his backyard, "One of the cars started to catch fire, so I went to my backyard to grab a hose to help out and I see the little girl in the back kinda just crawling around," said Compos.
Investigators haven’t released the identities of those involved and say that they believe that impairment may have played a factor in the collision.
