Goodyear Police Department has identified a brother and sister from Phoenix who were killed in a deadly single-vehicle motorcycle crash in Goodyear, a suburb of Phoenix, Sunday night, Jan.7th. The fatal crash took place just before 6:00 p.m. according to Goodyear police, 26-year old Fabian Arvizu was operating the motorcycle with his 16-year old sister, Victoria Arvizu, who was riding on the back seat. The siblings crashed along an especially sharp curve in the road near the intersection of 143rd and Vineyard Avenues.
Fabian Arvizu lost control of the motorcycle and both siblings crashed into a guardrail and were ejected from the motorcycle into a ravine along the road. First responders arrived to find Fabian Arvizu dead at the scene. His sister, Victoria was transported to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead by medical staff shortly after arriving. Both were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
Goodyear Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Kutis said in a press release that, “Initial findings show no immediate signs of impairment, but that will be confirmed with ... the blood test results. Additionally, evidence at the scene indicates that excessive speed does not appear to be a factor in the incident. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fatal accident.”
Victoria Arvizu was a sophomore at University high school in Tolleson, a city about 7 miles from the Phoenix Metro area. Grief counselors were at the school Monday, which is the 1st day of classes back from winter break. Students were in disbelief after the tragic news was announced during 2nd period. Many classmates spoke of the many virtues of Victoria. "She'd be there for you," explained Arthur Rhone, a junior at University High School. "If you were down, she'd ask you what was wrong and she would try to be there for you in a nice way.” Another student, who asked to not be identified, told us how much they looked up to Victoria. The student told us Victoria had a twin brother who attended class Monday. "What I said to her brother was, 'I know it hurts losing a family member, but she's still looking down on you. No matter where she is, she's looking down on your family and she'll always make sure you're okay,'" said the student. A fundraising campaign has been started to help with funeral costs.
