The three bicyclists were riding single file along McDowell Road near 88th Street in east Mesa when an SUV struck them. They were following a larger group of bicyclists which they were a part of. All three men are in their 40’s. The driver of the SUV, a 61-year old woman, was momentarily distracted attempting to reset her GPS device. Her vehicle veered to the right side of the road entering the bicycle lane and struck all three bicyclists.
All three cyclists were ejected from their bicycles on impact. They were transported to the hospital with an array of severe injuries. One of the bicyclists suffered life threatening injuries. The other two suffered serious injuries.
Their bicycles were crumpled by the impact; wheels and frames were bent. The front passenger side of the SUV had a dent from where it struck the cyclists.
Authorities will not release the names of the victims until their kin have been notified. Police have determined that woman was not intoxicated and was simply distracted. They are further investigating the accident.
