A water company in Douglas is facing fines of up to $37,500 per day if it does not comply with federal regulations for arsenic in the public drinking water.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered the company to create a schedule to fix the arsenic problem and follow the laws maintained by the Safe Drinking Water Act or they will be shut down.
The act requires arsenic levels to be less than 10 parts per billion.
The affected system has been linked with the deaths of several residents in the northwestern part of Douglas that it serves.
The families of the residents were the ones that first alerted authorities to the problem.
