Arizona #15 in U.S. Injury Related Deaths

May 22, 2012 | Filed under: blog

A recent study done to evaluate each state in United States on injury related deaths indicates that Arizona is the fifteenth state at risk and can do more to prevent injury related deaths. The study concluded that overall states and their people can also do more to prevent these situations which can happen out of negligence.

States were graded on ten key indicators of steps a state can take to prevent injuries. Some of these topics include: wearing a helmet, using seatbelts, drunk driving, motorcycle helmets, domestic violence, prescription drug abuse, and concussions in youth sports. Only two states, California and New York received the highest grade possible, nine out of ten; Montana and Ohio scored the lowest: two out of ten; Arizona scored six out of ten with ten other states.

The next part of the study was to look directly at the amount of deaths incurred from injuries per every 100,000 people. The study found that the third leading cause of deaths nationally is injuries caused by accidents and violence for people between the ages of one- and 44-years old. New Mexico had the highest rate of injury-related deaths in the U.S.: 97.8 per 100,000 people; Arizona at 70.7 per 100,000 people; New Jersey had the lowest rate 36.1 per 100,000 people; the national average was 57.9.

These preventable occurrences have a financial effect on the economy. Injuries every year generate about $406 billion in lifetime medical costs and lost productivity. This comes from the fact that about 2.8 million Americans are hospitalized every year on this matter.

Arizona has taken steps to improve the safety of its residents and those stepping onto their grounds. The city of Scottsdale in a partnership with its police have rolled out a program that will remind motorist to wear their seatbelt, which is a proactive move considering that Arizona is a state with secondary seat belt laws. A Scottsdale injury lawyer can help you get compensation if you are involved in an accident.

Safety is an important issue in and around Arizona. There are times when injury accidents can turn tragic leaving people in a tough situation. Luckily, Arizona is the home to the Law Offices of Byrl Lane. According to the press release by Safe States Alliance more than 50 million Americans are treated for medical injuries each year. If you are one of them, you deserve to have an injury lawyer who can accurately represent and fight for you.

The name of the test “The Facts Hurt: A State-By-State Injury Prevention Policy Report” was released by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Leading injury prevention experts from the Safe States Alliance and the Society for the Advancement of Violence and Injury Prevention partnered to produce the study as well.
