The two girls, cousins, one five years old, the other four were coloring under a shade tree. The school bell had rung and they were waiting for their ride. A truck drove onto the sidewalk then struck both of them.
The woman driving the truck had drunk a pint of vodka and decided to drive around the Whiteriver neighborhood near the school as it came to a close for the day. That’s when the driver, a nineteen year old and resident of Whiteriver lost control of her truck. Neighbors, witness to the accident accosted the driver to stop her vehicle until it stalled 200 yards away from the scene.
The oldest girl of the two died at the scene. The youngest suffered life-threatening injuries.
A judge has ruled the driver guilty. She is sentenced to nine years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and assault.
