Miles away from Maricopa, a truck towing a horse trailer was hit northbound on Ironwood Road. The sedan had been traveling at high speeds and was tailgating the trailer. It failed to stop when the trailer was slowing down to make a right turn south of Guadalupe Road.
Jaws of Life were used to pry open the top of the sedan and allow access to the trapped victims. A mother and her two children were extricated. The child sitting in the front seat of the vehicle was the only person not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. He suffered the worse injuries.
CPR was used to restore his breathing, and a doughnut, which he was eating at the time of the accident, was dislodged from his throat. Along with his mother and brother, they were airlifted to a nearby hospital. His family members were released from the hospital later in the afternoon. The boy remains in critical condition.
There were no horses in the back of the trailer at the time of the accident. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
