A Peoria police officer shot and killed a dog last week after it attacked a police officer and his K-9 partner, according to officials.
The accident occurred when the cop and his dog were searching a northern Peoria neighborhood for a suspect.
Apparently, the dog and the officer were investigating a call they had received from a woman who claimed that her dogs were barking at someone in her backyard. She had heard that the suspect was still on the loose and was close to her house in Lake Pleasant Parkway.
Another woman and her large Akita came by as the officer and the K-9 dog were investigating. The officer claimed that the Akita started to pull away from the owner towards the K-9. The woman was unable to control her dog.
As the Akita attacked the police dog, the officer tried to scare it away by hitting it and yelling at it. The Akita then turned towards the police officer and bit his leg.
Finally, the officer kicked the Akita away from the police dog. The Akita then changed his focus towards the officer and advanced towards him. The officer, fearing for his safety, pulled his gun and shot the dog twice, a police spokesperson said.
The Akita died at the scene and was later taken for rabies testing. Its owner was with it when it died and it bit her as well, injuring her hand.
The officer was treated for his bites at a local hospital.
