Maricopa County Sheriff’s officials are investigating a deadly auto vs pedestrian collision that left 3 people dead and 1 in critical condition after an SUV hopped a curb and struck the 4 pedestrians in the Phoenix suburb of Fountain Hills Tuesday morning, Mar. 13th. Maricopa County Sheriff's Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez said in a press release that 2 men and 2 women, in their 50s and 60s, were on the sidewalk at the intersection of Palisades and Saguaro Boulevards when for reasons unknown 27-year old Alex Bashaw driving in an SUV jumped the curb and struck the 4 pedestrians sometime around 9:30 a.m. First responders arrived and pronounced 2 of the pedestrians dead at the scene.
The 2 remaining pedestrians were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals where 1 victim succumbed to their injuries and passed away. The surviving victim remains in the hospital and is listed in critical condition.
Tim Budnick, the owner of a nearby Sears, said he was sitting in the back of his store when it happened, "There were 4 people lying in the intersection," said Budnick, "It was an unbelievable scene. I immediately saw a man, who was lying there, and I just kind of held his hand and I told him, 'are you there? Can you see me? What's your name?'"
Bashaw remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Maricopa County Sheriff’s office released Bashaw shortly afterwards and said they do not believe that drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash. Officials are looking into other criminal violations related to the crash.
