The Nevada Department of Public Safety is investigating a fatal collision that left 1 person dead in Phoenix early Monday morning, Oct. 2nd. The incident occurred just after 3:00 a.m. when a man called 911 to inform authorities that his vehicle had stalled in the HOV lane on the eastbound I-10 between the 7th Avenue and 19th Avenue exits after his vehicle ran out of gas. Less than a minute after that driver called DPS to inform them of his disabled vehicle, another vehicle, traveling the speed limit, rear-ended the 1st vehicle.
The man in the stalled vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries. According to DPS the driver who rear- ended the disabled driver will not be facing any charges and authorities determined that neither speed nor impairment was a factor in this collision. Traffic was restricted in the area but reopened around 6:30 a.m. The Arizona Department of Transportation says to expect a backup in the area while traffic resumes.
