August 31st ─ 2 teenage brothers, from Belvedere were injured, 1 critically, when their speeding vehicle veered off Paradise Drive in Tiburon and struck the roof of a residence as it fell 80 feet below the roadway into the backyard of a townhouse early Wednesday morning. The incident was reported to the California Highway Patrol and emergency crews from multiple Marin County agencies just before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday when the owner of the townhouse called dispatcher about a BMW 528i that was wedged between a deck and a wall. According to CHP officials, the teenage brothers were on their way to Redwood High School in Larkspur, when one of the brothers, 17-years old, lost control of the BMW on a curved section of Paradise Drive.
The BMW clipped the roof of a townhouse in the unincorporated area of Marin County east of Tiburon before falling down a cliff side and becoming wedged between a retaining wall and the deck of the townhouse. Both teenage boys were extricated from the BMW by Southern Marin Fire Protection District crews. Both teens were transported by ambulance to Marin General Hospital where the 17-year old driver was listed in critical condition, while his 16-year old brother suffered moderate injuries.
Michael Paul Jr. of Petaluma, a construction worker who was driving to a nearby construction site, said he witnessed the accident while driving on Paradise Drive. Paul said he saw the BMW round a turn at a high rate of speed. The BMW then lost control and veered off-road, disappearing off the steep edge of Paradise Drive. “It was way too fast. I was going slow. I was going maybe 25mph. They came around going maybe 50mph to 60mph. It was too much”, said Paul.
Tom Wyman was eating breakfast in the dining room of the townhouse with his girlfriend and their daughter when they heard a loud crash. Wyman was not aware that the BMW had clipped his roof, and landed just a few feet from the dining room. “I look around the corner, the car is smashed against the side of the wall and suspended in a tree,” Wyman said. Wyman, who has lived in the townhouse for 3 years, said he knew it was possible that a car could drop onto his home from Paradise Drive at any time, but hoped it would never happen.
Kim Gordon, a resident who lives down the street from the crash site, said she has always wanted a guardrail installed on Paradise Drive. Susan Rothschild, Wyman’s neighbor, said with bicyclists routinely sharing Paradise Drive with vehicles on the two-lane road, a guardrail is vital. “We want railings for the protection of drivers all along Paradise Drive,” she said.
