July 25th ─ a wrong-way driver is dead following a collision on I-40 in Flagstaff early Tuesday morning. The incident occurred around 12:40 a.m. early Tuesday morning and prompted the closure of I-40 for several hours while police conducted their investigation. According to Department of Public Safety, the driver was spotted in a truck going west on the eastbound lanes of traffic of the I-40 near Country Club Exit. Seconds later that truck had crashed head-on with another vehicle. According to witnesses on scene, the accident caused a chain reaction of collisions, a 2nd vehicle, a semi-truck, collided with the wrong way driver’s truck, and it then careened off the interstate and through a guardrail ending up in an embankment. A 3rd vehicle was also damaged after it struck debris from the previous accidents. The wrong way driver was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
3 other individuals were taken by ambulance to Flagstaff Medical Center in unknown conditions. The identity of the wrong-way driver has not been released to the public. DPS officials have not spoken about their findings and it is unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in this accident. This collision marks the 9th wrong-way driver accident that the state of Arizona has seen since the beginning of 2017, and the 11th dead resulting from a wrong-way driver crash.
