July 12th ─ one person is dead and another is hospitalized after a head-on collision involving a car and a minivan on a remote two-lane highway Tuesday morning. The incident occurred around 9:35 a.m. on the Byron Highway between Holey Road and North Bruns Way in Byron, a city 20 miles west of Stockton. According to investigators and eyewitness testimony, a Honda Civic sedan was heading west on Byron highway and a Mazda minivan was heading east with both vehicles travelling the speed limit going 50 mph. As the two vehicles began to approach one another, for reasons unknown the male driver of the Honda Civic veered across the center double yellow lines and into the opposing lane of traffic directly into the path of the Mazda minivan.
The head-on collision was imminent and unavoidable. The male driver of the Mazda minivan suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek. The male driver of the Honda Civic was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. Contra Costa CHP has not determined whether drugs or alcohol played a factor, or whether there may have been a medical emergency that led to the collision. No other information has been released in regards to the deceased male driver of the Honda Civic, and Contra Costa Coroner’s Offices say they will release a name as soon as next of kin has been notified.
The investigation is ongoing and authorities are urging anyone with further information regarding this incident, to please contact Contra Costa CHP Officer Gallegos at 925-646-4980, who is handling the investigation. Thank you.
