June 6th ─ a woman, suspected of being under the influence during a fatal car crash, is expected in court this week. Herendira Diaz De La Vega, 24-years old of Oregon, is facing gross vehicular manslaughter after she crashed her 2017 Nissan Maxima into a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. The incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Hellman Avenue and Eighth Street in Rancho Cucamonga. According to authorities and witnesses, the suspect was driving too fast and failed to yield at the 4-way stop sign intersection.
The driver of the Silverado had stopped and proceeded to continue when the suspect slammed into the driver’s side of the pickup. The force of the collision ripped open the Silverado’s roof and ejected a male passenger from the vehicle. The man was identified as Abel Rivera, 60, of Rancho Cucamonga. Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene while the suspect was apprehended and arrested. Police have determined alcohol to be a factor in the accident and have stated that the suspect faces a felony DUI charge as well as felony vehicular manslaughter.
