Drivers of the new 2013 Lexus GS350 can be faced with a dangerous situation when restarting the vehicle immediately after parking it with the wheel turned. A system within the vehicle responsible for re-centering the steering wheel can malfunction and fail to center the steering wheel. This off-centering can cause the driver to steer in an undesired direction increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) who manufactures the Lexus is now recalling about 663 vehicles which they believe could be faced with this defect. That is the number of vehicles they estimate were incorrectly manufactured in their plants within the December 12, 2011 through February, 2012 batch. TMC filed this recall through the National Highway Traffic and Safety Association May 16, 2012.
Owners will be notified by Toyota regarding this recall. TMC will have the dealers update the variable gear ratio steering system (VGRS) free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin early June 2012. If owners have questions regarding this recall they may contact Toyota dealers directly.
The VGRS is located in the steering control electronic unit of the GS350 and is mainly responsible for resetting the center of the wheel when the vehicle is turned on. In the units being recalled, the VGRS can off-center the steering wheel and drivers accustomed to the settings of the vehicle may lose control when steering. The chance of a crash can then increase and there is no telling what can happen in the aftermath.
