States were graded on ten key indicators of steps a state can take to prevent injuries. Some of these topics include: wearing a helmet, using seatbelts, drunk driving, motorcycle helmets, domestic violence, prescription drug abuse, and concussions in youth sports. Only two states, California and New York received the highest grade possible, nine out of ten; Montana and Ohio scored the lowest: two out of ten; Arizona scored six out of ten with ten other states.
The next part of the study was to look directly at the amount of deaths incurred from injuries per every 100,000 people. The study found that the third leading cause of deaths nationally is injuries caused by accidents and violence for people between the ages of one- and 44-years old. New Mexico had the highest rate of injury-related deaths in the U.S.: 97.8 per 100,000 people; Arizona at 70.7 per 100,000 people; New Jersey had the lowest rate 36.1 per 100,000 people; the national average was 57.9.
These preventable occurrences have a financial effect on the economy. Injuries every year generate about $406 billion in lifetime medical costs and lost productivity. This comes from the fact that about 2.8 million Americans are hospitalized every year on this matter.
Arizona has taken steps to improve the safety of its residents and those stepping onto their grounds. The city of Scottsdale in a partnership with its police have rolled out a program that will remind motorist to wear their seatbelt, which is a proactive move considering that Arizona is a state with secondary seat belt laws. A Scottsdale injury lawyer can help you get compensation if you are involved in an accident.
