A Chevrolet Corvette slammed against the rear of a Chevrolet Corsica on Superstition Freeway U.S. 60 eastbound at about 3:00 a.m. The Corvette was traveling 20 miles over the 65 mph posted speed limit at the time of the crash. The force pushed the Corsica against the sedan in front of it near Dobson and Alma School roads.
One passenger of the Corsica died on the scene of the crash. Another was rushed to the hospital where he was treated for serious brain injuries and died the following day at about noon. Other victims were also transported to the hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released.
The driver of the Corvette, a 24-year old, fled the scene of the accident on foot. He escaped witnesses who attempted to follow him on foot.
Roads were closed for about nine hours while police investigated the accident and searched for the driver.
Authorities say the driver of the Corvette is facing two counts of second-degree murder and a DUI.
