William Waldo IV, 17, was killed when the SUV his friend was driving crashed just south of Flagstaff on Interstate 17 late Saturday evening.
The Saguaro High School student had traveled with his friends to see the high school football championship in Flagstaff at Northern Arizona University.
The accident occurred just before 10:30 at night and authorities claim that Waldo was not wearing his seatbelt at the time. The driver remains in critical condition at the hospital.
One of the parents of another student said, "It's a waste, a total waste of a life. I feel so bad for the family and everybody involved."
