The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating a head-on wrong-way crash on the Loop 101 that involved multiple vehicles in Mesa early Friday morning, Feb. 2nd. According to DPS, several units responded to reports of a silver sedan driving the wrong-way and traveling southbound on the northbound Loop 101 near Guadalupe Road shortly after 2:40 a.m.
The silver sedan collided head-on into another vehicle near the off-ramp of Guadalupe Road. Following the initial collision, the silver sedan was subsequently struck by another vehicle which caused a chain reaction of collisions. 3 other vehicles were involved in the secondary collision totaling 5 vehicles damaged. 4 individuals were transported by ambulance to local hospitals with 3 suffering minor injuries that were described as non-life threatening. 1 individual was also transported to a nearby hospital and was listed in critical condition.
The wrong-way driver, described as a 26-year old man, was taken into custody shortly after DPS troopers arrived. According to a preliminary investigation, DPS investigators suggest that the wrong-way driver had transferred from the US 60 to the Loop 101, a stretch of roadway that spans about 2 miles, in the wrong direction. It is unclear if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the collision but the DPS have said they suspect impairment as the cause. Northbound lanes of Loop 101 were shut down from Guadalupe to Baseline Road for almost 6 hours but have since reopened shortly after 8:30 a.m. Southbound lanes remain open in the area.
