A 19-year-old man from Flagstaff that was apparently high on cocaine and drunk from a bottle of Jagermeister, lost control of his SUV and crashed into another car head-on, killing the other driver.
Kyle Wible, the son of a Flagstaff police officer, died when his car was struck at 80 mph on East Route 66 near downtown.
A grand jury has reindicted Roberto Alejandro Salamanca on charges of second-degree murder. This carries a heavier sentence than his previous sentence of manslaughter. Salamanca has pleaded innocent and is being held on $100,000 bond.
Salamanca attended high school in the United States, but has so far been unable to prove that he is in the country legally.
Immigration officials said that in cases like this, Salamanca will be tried in the United States and spend most or part of his sentence in jail here, before being deported.
Salamanca’s attorney has asked for a change of venue, stating that publicity surrounding this story has prejudiced and influenced jury members.
If convicted, Salamanca faces 10 to 22 years in prison. He also faces charges of driving under the influence and failure to remain at the scene of a death or serious accident.
