Phoenix, AZ – A five-year-old boy who was not in a car seat was killed in a head-on collision Monday morning; two adults were hospitalized.

A mother and her five-year-old son were in a pickup truck heading south near 35th Avenue and Camelback Road when another vehicle hit their car head-on at about 7:45 a.m. Neither the mother nor the child was wearing a seatbelt. There was a car-seat for child in the truck, but the boy wasn’t strapped in. The vehicle that struck them was being driven by a nineteen-year-old who was weaving through traffic at high speeds.
The five-year-old boy died at the scene. The mother was in critical condition and was taken to a local hospital. The driver of the other vehicle was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and did not receive major injuries. He was transported to a local hospital.
Authorities say that the injuries could have been reduced had the victims worn their seatbelts. In these types of accidents, the seriousness of the injuries increase when the victims hit the dash and the windshield.
The road was closed while investigators collected evidence. They believe that the nineteen-year-old driver was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
